Geopark Info-Center Treuchtlingen
Almost 15 million years ago, an asteroid with a diameter of about a kilometer raced toward Earth with a speed of about 70,000 kilometers per hour. Its impact near Nördlingen blasted a crater with a diameter of about 25 kilometers.
The exhibits of the Geopark Ries Info-Center in the Treuchtlingen Stadtschloss (town castle) are dedicated to this event. Illustrated info-panels convey everything worth knowing about the German National Geoparks, the UNESCO Global Geopark Ries and the Ries Crater’s special rocks. The permanent exhibition provides a lot of information about local nature and the natural interrelationships.
The interactive Geological History of the Earth and the impact animation are also available here.
